President’s Update – April

Published on 2nd April 2024 in Members News

It was my pleasure to represent our Club along with staff at the recent Annual WA Golf Industry Gala dinner and awards evening held in Perth. The Club once again was recognised as the Best Regional Golf Course for 2023 which again reaffirms what a great course we have but also reflects on the outstanding work provided by our staff across all activity areas. Well done to all staff, members and volunteers who assist with the running of the Club.

The Board held its monthly meeting earlier this week and discussed our financial position, upcoming events re SW Open and Centenary Cup, possible changes to the Constitution, general course management and some new projects. It was subsequently agreed to proceed with the replacement of our Hydrosmart water conditioning system to ensure the system that was installed in 2008 is able to keep performing to its designed capacity. The new work will reinforce our existing asset and minimise the risks associated with iron build up in our irrigation lines and water reticulation in general, at a cost of $15000. Further approval was also granted for improvements to our Driving Range facility with the purchase of a ball dispenser machine and range ball cleaner as the first stage of longer term plans to improve the Driving Range. The budget for both acquisitions is $38000 and it is expected that this investment will be fully recovered within 2 years as a result of increased revenue and staff efficiencies. Associated work and purchases will now be actioned as soon as possible.

I also understand that the positions left vacant recently in our greenkeeper operations have now been filled, which is great news. It was also fun to see departing staff member Michael ’Spud’ Newman who hit the opening tee shot to start this years golf season, in appreciation of his work over a period of 12 years as 2IC to Dave Brennan, Course Superintendent. Opening Day was held on Saturday 16 March and the person selected to hit the first tee shot of the season is regarded as an honour for any member or individual who has made a valuable contribution to our Club. A farewell for Spud was held on 27th March.

Happy Easter to everyone at the best regional golf course in WA.
