BGC Women’s News

Women’s President – Desi Gardiner

I would like to inform the women’s membership of some decisions made by the committee over the past few months.

Equal Opportunity and Weekend Gold Letter Events for Women

Earlier this year there were concerns expressed by some members that there was no opportunity for weekend players to compete in any Individual Gold Letter events as they are only offered to midweek players.

To address this problem I sought guidance from Golf WA. It was recommended that an equal playing calendar be available to the women who are unable to play on weekdays.

The Marion Johnston Memorial Championship

The Marion Johnston Memorial Championship which is a Stroke Event (there are also Nett prizes) has been created with this in mind.

Marion was our first Women’s Life Member. Sadly she passed away last year so it is fitting that we honour her with an event in her name.

We have the support of the Johnston Family who has donated $5,000.00 towards the event this money is to last for 10 years.

Easter Cup

The second event is The Easter Cup which has been available to women to play in for a number of years. This competition is a Nett event only.  It is a Gold Letter event for men but previously has not been for women.

The Board was advised of the information recommended by Golf WA and agreed to upgrading the Women’s Easter Cup and the proposed Marion Johnston Memorial Gross Event to Gold Letter status.

Gold Letter status means that the names of the winners of these two events will go onto an Honour Board.

Wednesday Golf Changes

No Sponsors & Extra Charge

It was decided due to COVID-19 that we would remove the sponsors for the year. We have adopted the same model used by the women on Saturday – to add an extra $1.00 per round on to the competition fee to cover trophies.  Our regular Sponsors have been contacted and notified of the change.  We have retained the sponsor of our Silver Spoon event which is Bunbury Mitsubishi formerly Bunbury Holden.

Cancellation of the Bunbury Bowl

We made the decision to cancel the Bunbury Bowl & Classic for 2020 due to uncertain times ahead. The time was re-allocated to our own membership to use that weekend.

The cancelled Foursomes Championships which is a Gold Letter event has been rescheduled for Saturday 15th August, 2020.

Bunbury Open Day

We are proceeding with our Open Day on Friday 14th August.  This event is sponsored by Perkins Builders and represented by Marg Terry.

I am asking for volunteers to bake scones, sausage rolls, mini quiches or make a slice for this day.  Please contact me if you can assist Desi Gardiner 0407 197877.

Golden Bracelet Refixtured

The Golden Bracelet which was to be played earlier in the year has been moved to Wednesday 14th & 21st October 20.

This event will be sponsored by our Past President’s Wendy Joyce, Helen Newberry, Glenda Novel, Lorraine Martin, Audrey Hounsfield, Meryl Brown, Jan Drake-Brockman, Robyn Waugh, Tami Mepham and Rose Norton.

There is a wonderful dinner to follow and if you are unable to play we would welcome you to join us for dinner on the 21st October, 20.

Match Play Championship Rescheduled to September

As you will have noticed on the fixtures, the Match Play Championships have been rescheduled to September to avoid conflict with the coring of the greens.

Qualifying Dates

Wednesday 9th September 2020

Saturday 12th September 2020

Sunday 13th September 2020

Monday 14th September 2020

Match Play Quarter & Semi Final = Wednesday 16th September

Match Play Final = Wednesday 23rd September

There is a Dinner to follow all welcome.

The Club Champion will be the Winner of the Match Play Championship.

Conditions of Play for this event will be posted on this website when they are completed.

Women’s Annual Meeting

The Women’s Annual Meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday 30th September. At this meeting, the Committee will present reviews/reports of the year and their proposals for the next season. The membership is invited to provide feedback to, and ask questions of the Committee. Any recommendations for the Board will be considered, discussed and presented prior to the Club AGM.  In previous years there has been insufficient time to do this.

Women’s Committee Nominations

Nominations for Committee positions will be posted on the Board in the Change Rooms two weeks prior to the Women’s Annual Meeting.

The existing Committee will stay in their position until Closing Day which is Wednesday 18th November 2020. Then the new committee will take over.  This allows for a handover.

 Saturday Women’s Golf

Afternoon Timeslots on Saturday

The addition of time slots for the afternoon for women is a major step forward.  It allows women the flexibility to play golf at a time of their choosing.

The afternoon players are included in the daily Women’s competition.

Presentations are made for the following week after play.  This concept has been accepted by the Women’s playing group, presented with some humour, giving a running update on who may be the winner for the next week.

I hope this clarifies our programme for the year.
